TechnoCalyps - Part III - The Digital Messiah

| |

This part covers the metaphysical consequences of the new technological revolution. On the one hand scientist start to use metaphysical concepts to describe the impact of their research, on the other hand, a surprisingly large number of scientific projects is inspired by religious aspirations and more and more theologians from any religious or spiritual belief are getting interested in these aspirations of new technology, making the discussion inextricable complex.

As we move towards the inevitability of conscious machines and a probable singularity I think it's important to apply a far more skeptical view to some of the non-scientific, downright kooky ideas this video seems to support. I'm interested in alternative views but I fear that the growing and highly rational transhumanist movement may be to some part discredited by those who are unwilling to apply basic principles of science and reason to our current condition.

We need to treasure reason and science as the best models we have to date to explain our circumstances.

Those that play fast and loose or recklessly with science, making bizarre claims of aliens and supernatural events should be welcome to the debate table but should also be held to the same high standards we apply to our own ideas.

I'd argue that SyNapse and Blue Brain are the projects most likely to bring us conscious computing - let's hear more about those.
